Today, we are thrilled (yes – we do love data) to bring you some fresh green insights from Statistics Denmark – released as of today!
🟩1️⃣ Have Organic Retail Sales Peaked in Denmark? In 2023, retail sales of organic food were almost unchanged from 2022, totalling 15.5 billion DKK. There was a slight decrease of 4% in quantity, as the price per kilogram increased for most products
🟩2️⃣ Increase in Vegetable Sales, Decline in Meat 🥦 Sales of organic vegetables increased by 5% in value, with no change in quantity. In contrast, meat sales declined by 14% in value and 13% in quantity from 2022 to 2023. Perhaps the inflated living costs and interest rates are biting…
🟩3️⃣ Fruit and Vegetables Remain the Largest Organic Segment 🍎 Fruit and vegetables continue to be the largest segment in organic sales, with revenue of 5.7 billion DKK in 2023, representing 37% of total organic retail sales. Perhaps not unsurprisingly as most of our pesticide intake comes from conventionally grown fruits and vegs.
🟩4️⃣ Lower Rising Prices for Organic Foods 📈 The average price per kilogram for organic foods rose by 3% from 2022 to 2023, which was lower than the overall food price increase of 8%.
🟩5️⃣ Declining Area for Organic Vegetables 🌱 The organic area for horticultural crops decreased by 11% from 2022 to 2023, while the total horticultural area fell by 10%. However, the organic share remained unchanged at 32%.
Our forthcoming, “Nordic Insights”, will delve further into aspects on sustainable development, providing more of the data we cherish so much.
👀 Stay tuned!
