Today is the last day of the Nordic Insights Christmas Calendar: 24 posts over 24 days, filled with data and science backed advice for a greener Christmas.
But did you know that we celebrate Christmas on December 24/25 because of a scientific miscalculation? When the Catholic church decided to celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25, this was the actual day of the winter solstice according to the Roman (Julian) calendar at the fourth century AD.
The Julian calendar was the standard calendar in our part of the world until the 16th century, when the Gregorian calendar was introduced and gradually replaced the less accurate version. The Julian calendar did not disappear completely, and is still used by the Orthodox church in several countries. That explains why many Orthodox churches celebrate Christmas the night between January 6 and 7.
Regardless, let’s celebrate the return of the light, the birth of the Christian tradition that has shaped our societies for centures, and the coming new year.
The Nordic Insights Newsletter will return in 2024, with more delightful data-based insights nudging us all towards more sustainable living. But now we close the laptops and wish you all a very merry green Christmas.
